The health science center of Wuhan University of Science and Technology (WUST) benefits from the "State Council Government Special Allowance" for two experts. In 2022, one young teacher was recognized as one of the world's top 2% scientists, while another individual was selected as one of the first medical leading talent in Hubei Province. 3. Introduction to the health science center

The health science center of WUST, whose origins can be traced back to Wuhan Iron and Steel Medical College, has developed into a well-known medical education institution in China. The center offers five undergraduate majors: Clinical Medicine, Preventive Medicine, Health Inspection and Quarantine, Pharmacy and Nursing. Currently, it provides two doctoral programs in biomedical engineering and occupational hazard identification and control, as well as three academic master's degree programs in Basic Medicine, Biology, Public Health and Preventive medicine; Additionally, there are other three professional master's degree offerings in Clinical medicine, Nursing, Pharmacy. There are 2323 full-time undergraduate students, 1362 master's students, 21 doctoral students and 117 international students.

The institution employs a total of 168 full-time teachers, which includes 36 professors, 64 associate professors, 15 doctoral supervisors, and 353 graduate supervisors. Currently, there are doctoral degree programs in biomedical engineering, occupational hazard identification and control, academic master's degree programs in basic medicine, biology, preventive medicine, and professional master's degree programs in clinical medicine, nursing, and pharmacy.

4. School of Medicine

Founded in 1958, the School of Medicine comprises four divisions: the Department of Basic Medical Science, the Department of Clinical Medicine, the Department of Pharmacy, and the Department of Nursing. It offers three undergraduate programs: Clinical Medicine, Nursing, and Pharmacy. Currently, the institution enrolls 1,732 undergraduates, 1,079 postgraduate students (excluding equivalent degrees), 19 doctoral candidates, and 186 international students.

Faculty strength

The institution is staffed by 112 full-time teachers, including 16 professors and 43 associate professors. Among them, there is 1 candidate for the National Major Talent Plan, 7 candidates for the National and Hubei Provincial Talent Introduction Plan, and 1 leading medical talent recognized by Hubei Province. Additionally, the faculty includes 2 cross-century academic backbones of Hubei Province, 1 renowned teacher's studio, 1 professor from the Institute, and 1 foreign expert affiliated with the Ministry of Science and Technology. Furthermore, 1 expert receives a special allowance from The State Council and the Hubei Provincial People's Government, alongside 4 young and middle-aged experts who have made outstanding contributions at the provincial and ministerial levels.

5. Public Health School

The School of Public Health of Wuhan University of Science and Technology originated from the teaching and research Department of Health of Wuhan Iron and Steel Medical College in 1958, established the Department of Health in 1984, and became the School of Public Health under the Medical School in 2008. On March 28, 2022, the School of Public Health of Wuhan University of Science and Technology was formally established. The college has 6 departments and 1 center, including the Department of Epidemiology and Health Statistics, the Department of Environmental Health and Occupational Medicine, the Department of Nutrition, Food Hygiene and Toxicology, the Department of Child Health and Maternal and Child Health, the Department of Health Inspection and Quarantine, the Department of Social Medicine and Health Service Management, and the Public Health Experimental Center. It has two undergraduate majors, preventive medicine and Health Inspection and quarantine, and a master's degree in the first-level discipline of public health and preventive medicine, and relies on the two first-level disciplines of "Chemical Engineering and Technology" and "Safety science and engineering" to recruit doctoral students, and can carry out undergraduate, master and doctoral personnel training.

In 2012, public health and preventive medicine were designated as key training disciplines and doctoral training fields in Hubei Province. By 2015, the provincial graduate work station for the Public Health and Preventive Medicine discipline was established at the Hubei Center for Disease Control and Prevention. Additionally, a demonstration practice training base for 'Occupational Disease Prevention and Control' was collaboratively established with five organizations, including the Wuhan Occupational Disease Prevention and Control Institute, the Shiyan Occupational Disease Prevention and Control Institute, and the Wuhan Iron and Steel Occupational Disease Prevention and Control Institute. In 2016, the Hubei Province Key Laboratory of Occupational Hazard Identification and Control was established. The following year, it received recognition as a "Hubei Famous Teacher Studio (Preventive Medicine)." In 2018, the preventive medicine specialty was recognized under the "Jingchu Excellent Doctor Collaborative Education" plan, and the Wuhan Occupational Disease Prevention and Control Hospital was officially designated as the affiliated hospital of Wuhan University of Science and Technology. In 2019, the program was acknowledged as a provincial teaching team for the "Preventive Medicine Professional Core Course," and the major in "Preventive Medicine" was classified as a provincial first-class major. In 2020, the "Health Inspection and Quarantine" major was approved as a provincial first-class major, and the "Health Inspection and Quarantine Professional Core Course" was recognized as a provincial teaching team. In 2021, the "Public Health and Health" program received approval from the "14th Five-Year Plan" for Hubei Provincial colleges and universities, along with the Hubei Provincial Center for Disease Control and Prevention, to establish a talent training and scientific innovation base in public health and preventive medicine. At the beginning of 2023, leveraging the existing public health talent training practices and training bases in Hubei Province, along with municipal and prefectural CDCs, our hospital established practice teaching bases in Hanchuan City, Yingcheng City, Danjiangkou City, Gucheng County, and other CDCs. This initiative aims to actively respond to the national rural revitalization strategy, better serve grassroots communities, and enhance the capacity of grassroots public health professionals. We will engage in personnel training, scientific research collaboration, and social services. To promote the integration of medical and preventive efforts, the School of Public Health and the School of Medicine jointly signed a talent training co-construction agreement with Wuhan Psychological Hospital (Wuhan Mental Health Center) to advance the prevention and control of "public mental health" and address the "mental health of diverse populations."

After more than thirty years of dedicated effort and development, the college has successfully established a faculty characterized by stable research directions, extensive knowledge, and a well-balanced age structure. Currently, there are 56 full-time faculty members, which include 20 professors, 21 associate professors, 12 doctoral supervisors, and 36 master's supervisors. Among these educators, 89% hold doctoral degrees, and 66% are under the age of 45. The faculty comprises a Changjiang Scholar Chair Professor, a leading medical talent from Hubei Province, an individual receiving the 'Special Government Allowance of the State Council,' two 'Young and Middle-aged Experts with Outstanding Contributions in Hubei Province,' and two 'Hubei Province Cross-Century Academic Backbones.' Additionally, there is one outstanding young individual in Hubei Province, one top-notch planned talent in Hubei Province, one top-notch young talent in Hubei Province, one recipient of the Huo Yingdong Teacher Award, six Chutian students, and three distinguished professors/chair professors recognized as 'Chutian Scholars.' Furthermore, the internship base includes 18 part-time professors or associate professors. Notably, one of the college's young faculty members was included in the 2022 list of the top 2% of the world's leading scientists.

Our hospital adheres to the educational philosophy and developmental principles of 'being virtuous, practicing medicine, and learning to benefit the world.' Over the years, the college has made significant strides in the construction of undergraduate quality engineering programs. It has garnered notable achievements, including one first prize, two second prizes, and two third prizes in provincial teaching excellence awards, as well as three school-level teaching achievement awards. The college also boasts one first-class virtual simulation course and two first-class online courses at the provincial level, along with one renowned teacher studio and two teaching teams recognized in Hubei Province. Additionally, students in the major have excelled, winning two special prizes and first prizes in the National Health Education Works Competition, a first prize in the National Life Science Competition, and two provincial second prizes in the College Student Challenge Cup. Furthermore, 35 national and provincial college student innovation and entrepreneurship projects have been approved, and students have published a total of 23 papers as either first or co-authors, which includes five papers sourced from SCI.

The department has formed a number of distinctive disciplinary development directions, including “early risk identification and multifaceted intervention for cognitive impairment in community-aged people”, “typical new pollutants and reproductive health”, “attributional disease burden assessment of adverse environmental factors”, “intelligent recreation and healthy aging”, “construction of novel (photochemical) biosensors”, “environmental pollution biomonitoring technology” and so on. ”, “Intelligent Recreation and Healthy Aging”, “Construction of Novel (Photo-) Electrochemical Biosensors”, “Environmental Pollution Bio-monitoring Technology”, etc. There is one Hubei Provincial Key Laboratory of “Occupational Hazard Identification and Control”, two university-level key research platforms, namely, “Wuhan University of Science and Technology Nutrition and Health Research Institute” and “Wuhan University of Science and Technology Brain Science Advanced Technology Research Institute”. There are two key research platforms at university level, and three research platforms at university level, including “Institute of Social Development and Health Management”, “Center for Children and Women's Health Promotion” and “Center for Interdisciplinary Research on Health Policy”.        Research Platforms. The backbone faculty of the college has a certain influence in the domestic and international academic circles, and has undertaken 72 national, provincial and municipal scientific research projects in the past five years, including the special projects of the National Natural Science Foundation of China and the sub-projects of the Ministry of Science and Technology, etc. The college has published 516 papers, among which 319 papers have been indexed in Chinese and SCI journals, and a number of papers have been selected as the highly cited papers and the hot papers. 2022 has been granted the “Scientific and Technological Innovation 2030 - Brain Science and Brain-like Science and Technology” award. In 2022, we have been awarded the “Science and Technology Innovation 2030 - Brain Science and Brain-like Research” major project with 14,740,000 RMB, the Young Scientist Project with 1,200,000 RMB, and one national talent project. It has won one second prize and three third prizes for scientific and technological progress in Hubei Province, one second prize for excellent research results in Hubei Province, six national standards, and three national invention patents. Relying on the favorable scientific research environment and geographical advantages, the discipline has made remarkable achievements in talent training, scientific research and social service, providing important technical support for the construction and development of public health in the country and Hubei Province.

The College has been actively engaged in international and inter-university academic exchanges. Dozens of individuals have studied abroad and visited various countries and regions, including Europe, the United States, Britain, and Canada. The College has established collaborative relationships with universities and laboratories in these regions and selects outstanding young faculty members, postgraduate students, and undergraduates to participate in exchange and study programs abroad each year.
